André Swanepoel Prior to his retirement in 2004, André Swanepoel was Deputy Executive Officer of South Africa's Financial Services Board and Deputy Registrar of Pensions. In this capacity, which he held since 1991, he was the chief regulator of the world's 16th largest insurance market. Under his guidance South Africa took significant steps forward in the areas of corporate governance, investment regulation, regulation of intermediaries and other financial advisers, and consumer education. Mr. Swanepoel played a key role in the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), serving on its Executive Committee and chairing its Emerging Markets Committee. One of two main committees of the IAIS, the Emerging Markets Committee focused mainly on the training of insurance supervisors from the emerging market countries. Mr. Swanepoel served on the King Committee, which was commissioned to revise corporate governance in South Africa, as well as the life insurance Ombudsman's Council, and on the Board of the Insurance Institute of South Africa. A professional actuary, he is now a private consultant on financial regulation, insurance, and pensions.
