Insurance Supervisory Education Program

The International Association of Insurance Supervisors, which was formed in 1992, includes the insurance regulatory officials of nearly 100 countries. These insurance supervisors cooperate through the IAIS in an effort to maintain just and efficient insurance markets for the benefit and protection of policyholders. Along with the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision and the International Organization of Securities Commissioners, the IAIS is developing global standards for the supervision of financial institutions.

A crucial component in this effort to enhance the quality of insurance supervision is the Insurance Supervisory Education Program created by the IAIS Education Committee. Organized with the assistance of the International Insurance Foundation, this program brings together the insurance supervisors of an entire region for seminars on common problems of insurance regulation:

• Licensing and authorization of insurers, reinsurers, and brokers
• Monitoring of technical provisions and solvency
• Investment restrictions
• Insurance accounting and financial reporting
• Data collection and statistical reporting
• Professional ethics
• Reinsurance
• Treatment of troubled companies
• Regional integration in the field of insurance

Typically conferences draw from 40 to 50 participants, including experts from the advanced insurance markets as well as the emerging markets. In addition to the formal presentations by experts, these conferences include small group discussions and analysis of specific case studies.
